David Thompson - 200 year Bi-Centennial

This year marks the 200th year since explorer, surveyor and Northwest Co. fur trader David Thompson and his voyageur-mountain men, arrived by canoe  and horse, from Canada.  Thompson established NorthWest Company Fur Trading Posts: Kullyspel House on Lake Pend Orelle and Saleesh House on the Clark Fork (Saleesh) River, in 1809.  His men had previously established a cache or hangard in 1809 and traded at a couple locations along the Kootenai (McGillivray) River (near Libby, MT. and Bonners Ferry, ID.  David Thompson and his men had the initial Europeen contact and interaction with Native American tribes of Northwest Montana, Northern Idaho and Northeast Washington.

The Kalispel Encampment will celebrate this anniversary - June 24-26, 2009.  Archaeological, historical and tribal information will be shared with participants.  Fro information or to register, contact Ann Ferguson, Bonner County Museum - (208) 263-2344.  Recommended reading: David Thompson - The Saleesh House Period 1807-1812 - Sometimes Only Horses to Eat, by Carl Haywood.

Stimulus Jobs Are Good For All Of Us

The Economic Stimulus is now creating some jobs - young adults are being employed in our parks and ouher outdoor locations - doing trail clearing and other maintenance.  Stimulus money to pay for outdoor work - improvements to public land, is an excellent way to address our present economic crisis and fix the long list of back-logged needs. I was a trail crew leader and trail contract inspector with the USFS for many years and I am well aware of the long list of unfunded recreational trail projects, which are necessary to reduce safety hazards to users and restore trail resources, which are being lost due to lack of maintenance and use. The CCC's built most of our National Forest trail system during the 1930's depression. These trails need to be restored and hazards mitigated. It's time we address our public lands and give people jobs where they will benefit everyone.

Now if we could just make sure everyone has affordable health care - there are hundreds of thousands who work for the US Government year after year, who don't have "permanent appointments" or health care and retirement benefits.

The Socialism of Universal Health Insurance

About 50 years ago, as I recall - the 1960 presidential election between the very conservative Richard M. Nixon and liberal John F. Kennedy, was almost identical ideologically, to the the last match between McCain and Obama. Looking back 50 years is a deja vu experience, with Republican and Democratic ideology running to the right and left of center. JFK inspired the country, much like Obama today. Though only 12, Kennedy would sure have gotten my vote.

The remainder of this QNA seems to encompass much of today's politics - here is my take on it. The USA has by necessity many shared resources - State and Federal highways & roads, hydro-electric dams, trains, agriculture, schools... - actually most everything is in some way supported by our government and that seems OK with most people - until you mention health insurance. Than its like Obama's Health Care proposal will turn us into Socialists! That's self-serving Bull! But the Health Insurance industry will be fighting this one to the end. We are now subsidizing the insurance, banking and auto industries - government treasury is now paying for many workers health insurance. In the 1950's we lived in a bubble - protected by tariffs and transport costs - Americans bought goods made in the USA - we also had the best stuff right here. Now our industries must compete in a Global Economy. GM and others cannot continue to give employees HEALTH INSURANCE, as it jacks the cost of production and the cost to you - These industries are now looking for government support, because they can't compete with foreign products. If we had a universal Health Plan - We would be more competitive in the Global Economy.

The World's Share

Another QnA question: What would the World be like if we all had to share?

Funny thing - That's exactly what is going on and has been for some time. John Lennon's song "Imagine" about not believing in religion, government... I think it might have really kicked in then - about 1980. We realized in the 1950's we would have to feed the world - or they would starve. We have been sharing food & cloths, money, armed services, education, medical treatments, training....the Civilized world has been trying to share the wealth with the 3rd world for quite some time. Too bad there is so much resistance in the middle east - those people just don't get it - so we're chasing them around the oasis with big sticks. I think this last economic collapse of world markets was just more re-distribution of wealth. Republicans appear to be more upset with this sharing of their wealth and there's not a damn thing they can do about it.

My Bonus

Earlier today, I answered a MSN QnA by Oracle - an analogy about shuffling deck chairs on a sinking ship -
For the past couple days it seems that the news and the general public has been narrowly focused on the 1.65M AIG bonus; while hundreds of billions and trillions are being shuffled in the name of economic stimulus and recovery. Shouldn't we keep focused on the big picture - however difficult that is and not so obsessed with the deck chairs?

I thought the previous Q by Oracle was good, but it vanished; so I'll try this one.

Socialism in America is for Public Benefit

From my point of view, all of our public assets, including our schools, road & highway system, public transit, public lands, hydroelectric dams... have been operated for the benefit of all americans - this is our socialistic system. Their was some expansion of this system, as our government began to support various private industries, like several airlines, Amtrack, social security, medicare, children's health insurance protection and other government sponsored programs. More recently, bailout of banking, insurance and auto industry - leading to more public control or government control of these industries. I think most or all of this socialism was initiated before Obama was President. He's just going along with these programs, because they are a benefit to all Americans and there is no other entity able to handle these responsibilities or the funding necessary for operation. Wink

Go Obama Go

I hope President Obama can change the economic crisis real fast, as most people don't have any patients. Gift with a bow  At least he's trying - as the stock market is crashing more, world wide, each day - we have the hope that there will be a light at the end - Obama is leading us out of this unknown darkness, with his shinning light. Tremendous President!

Economic Stimulus

The President is trying move our economy in the right direction - it's a start and I'm sure additional stimulus will be necessary as the economy improves.

I think Sen. Max Baucus (D-MT) would be an excellent choice for Secretary of Health (HHS) cabinet appointment.  He has been working on a universal health insurance plan for years.  Hot

 Hi  Mike,
I generally keep my thoughts to myself about both politics and religion, but, sometimes I find it very hard to keep quiet. Think back and remember when Bush took office there was a huge suprplus, and he left this administration with a huge deficit. The Bush administration put us in this economic downfall, they 'pushed us off a cliff' by, in my mind, being irresponible, and continueing to raise interest rates quarter after quarter, makeing it impossible for people to make their mortgage payments as they doubled and sometimes tripled, forcing them into foreclosure. Now it's up to the Obama administration to try and get us out of this mess. It won't be smooth and mistakes will be made, but at least the man is trying, which is more than Bush did. SO....for all of the Bush lovers and/or Obama haters, quit your crying and whining, suck it up and wait and see. I can't wait for the day when I can say "I told you so!"

I am not affiliated with msn. I'm just a fellow disgruntled user. I read your comment about "Updated Spaces".
I too have asked about this. They removed the "Updated Spaces" feature and won't
answer why. For me, that was why I was here...meeting new people from all around the world.
(I saw you space a while back on updated spaces and learned what Geocaching is...I had never heard of it before)
What has replaced it is...on some of the pages like the profile page I think (not all work the same for some reason) you'll
see a "search people or web" box with a green button in the right side of the box. When you
click the button you get a list of sometimes 25 million people, Here's the rub... it's not a list of updated spaces, just spaces...so we get to waste our time click click click click only to find out there's nothing at all on the space...THANKS MSN. Also, the "Search" feature doesn't really work anyways. I have tried to search people/spaces with unique names and titles and it comes back blank.
Frankly, I think this new thing is absolute crap
